FISHING While one does not often associate waterways with the desert, this is what sets Yuma apart from other Southwest destinations. With the completion of the Laguna Dam in 1909, and the Imperial Dam in 1938, the Colorado River became a series of lakes and scenic waterways. For the avid fisherman, these cool waters are home to world class bass fishing, where the serious or novice angler will find Largemouth Bass, Striped Bass, Flathead Bass, Channel Bass, Blue Bass, Tilapia, Catfish, Crappie, Striped Mullet and Bluegill.
WATER RECREATION Most of these lakes and waterways offer recreational boating, with boat launching available at Senator Wash, Squaw Lake, Hidden Shores, Mittry Lake and Martinez Lake. Hidden Shores and Martinez Lake offer boat rentals, while water skiing is permitted at Martinez Lake, Senator Wash, and an 8-mile stretch of the Colorado River paralleling the Picacho State Recreation Area.
HUNTING Hunting in the Yuma area is also available. Dove season is twice a year, Sep.1st-Sep.15th and Nov. 23-Jan. 6th, while Mule Deer season happens several times during the year. For information on licenses, regulations and fees contact the Arizona Game & Fish at 928.342.0091.
CAMPING While many will spend the day enjoying the enchanting desert terrain and rugged mountains in the Yuma region, overnight camping can extend this pleasure in many areas. Campers may select their own site in the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge. In the Imperial Dam Recreation Area, Senator Wash and Squaw Lake Campground offer campsites on or near their lakes` shores. Long-term permits are available for some areas. Additionally, Mittry Lake Wildlife Area offers campsites and there are many private RV parks and camping resorts in the region.
