Camping With Kids
By: Dian Thomas

  • It is important when camping with small children to make your campsite a safe and recognizable place. Make a family flag or banner from brightly colored material and put it on top of your tent or hang it from a nearby tree to make it easy for your child to identify your campsite. Or, tie a noisy bell to the zipper or opening flap of your tent. If a child tries to leave the tent in the middle of the night, the bell will immediately alert you. Warn your children about dangers, such as poisonous plants or hazardous areas. Reinforce their knowledge by having them draw their own pictures.

  • Children will be happy campers if they are comfortable and protected from bugs and weather. To keep crawling bugs and prickly weeds off childrenís legs, elasticize the ankles of their pants. To do this, you will need to sew a casing, using wide bias tape, on the inside bottom of each pant leg and insert elastic. Just be sure you donít make the elastic too tight for feet to go through. A couple of big, thick elastic rubber bands will also do the trick.
